Derby College student, Jake Beardsley was crowned East Midlands Collegiate Golf Champion on Wednesday at Morley Hayes Golf & Leisure complex. Beardsley returned a solid round of 73 over the demanding par 72 championship course at Morley Hayes to finish 2 shots ahead of Derby College team mate Nico Pickard and the rest of the 50 strong field of competitors from colleges around the East Midlands.

Beardsley put in a consistent performance, reaching the turn in level par 36 having missed a short birdie putt on 9, his only real blemish was a 3 putt bogey on 17 followed by a good up & down for a par on the difficult 18th to be home in 37 for a total 73.

Jake commented; “I really enjoyed it out there, my preparation for today was good, I spent some quality time on the range with Coach James Whatley before I teed it up and that paid dividends. I am now looking forward to representing Derby College in the national finals”.

Nico Pickard started well in difficult weather conditions, fighting the morning wind and rain to turn in level par 36, with 3 bogies on the back 9 for a closing 75 and 2nd place.

The 3 man team event, best two net scores to count,  was won by Derby College A (Jake Beardsley 73-4-69, Dean Hibbert 78-3-75, Bradley Larrimore 87-9-77) with a score of 144, one stroke ahead Derby College B (Nico Pickard 75-7-68, Jack Cope 82-5-77, Liam Slater 82-5-77) who returned 145. This completed a clean sweep on the day for Derby College.

The event hosted by the East Midlands Colleges forms part of the British Colleges Golf Championship with the top 4 players male and female progressing to the National finals next spring at Loughborough University. Beardsley and Pickard will also be joined by fellow team member Danniella Smedley who finished 2nd in the female section. Dean Hibbert (Derby College) narrowly missed out finishing tied 5th on 78, two double bogeys on the short par 4 - 9th and 16th proving extremely costly at the end of the day.

 All 3 are members of the PERFORMANCE GOLF ACADEMY DERBY programme, run in partnership with Derby College. The programme is having a positive effect on the students and their golf preparation as this is the first time Derby College have had representatives in the national finals of the British Colleges golf championships.

PERFORMANCE GOLF ACADEMY DERBY programme manager Nigel Furniss commented;
“We are pleased with the results from today; they demonstrate the strength of the programme we are delivering to the students. The students have all commented how much the support from the programme is benefiting them, and this is beginning to show in their performances and the results they are achieving”.
