| STUDENTS OFF TO HOME OF GOLF Students attending the Performance Golf Academy Derby education and player training programme are due to make a visit to “the home of golf”, St. Andrews. The Derby College students will make the trip north of the border in early March to compete in the British Colleges Sport Open Golf Championship. The event which is being organised by Scottish Colleges Sport will take place at the Fairmont St. Andrews golf complex in St. Andrews on 4th and 5th March 2009. The event will see students from colleges across the U.K. compete in both team and individual events played over 2 rounds on the Bruce Devlin designed Kittocks course which is a truly magnificent 72 par, 7,049 yard championship course that sweeps its way along the rugged seaside landscape Jake Beardsley of Derby College will be looking to add the British Colleges title to the East Midlands Colleges title he picked up in October 2008. Jake will be accompanied by 10 other students from Derby College who will be competing in the event. The students will arrive in St. Andrews on Tuesday 3rd March for a practice round prior to the event commencing on Wednesday 4th. The organisers are looking forward to welcoming students from across the British Isles and have a laid on a gala reception on the evening of Wednesday 4th for all the teams and competitors attending. Performance Golf Academy Derby programme director Nigel Furniss explained; “This will be a great experience for our academy members to visit “the home of golf” St. Andrews and compete in a national event. I know the students are really looking forward to the opportunity to play links golf and the challenges it will present. Competing in an event of this stature fulfils our aims at the academy to present the students with opportunities to play in major national fixtures over 1st class golf courses.” Speaking on behalf of the students, Jake Beardsley commented; “We are all excited by the chance to visit “the home of golf” and play over a great course. This will be our first major event of 2009, and we are working hard in preparation and looking for a positive outcome”.
